(2010-12-10) This dataset combines seven GFWC anthropogenic change datasets (four previously published and three unpublished) to create a dataset with a similar methodology and time period for a large portion of Canada’s forest landscapes.
(2010-09-13) This dataset was created as part of GFWC’s project “Where Is the Best of What’s Left?” The purpose was to map all of Canada’s remaining intact forest landscape fragments larger than 5,000 hectares for the boreal and taiga ecozones, and larger than 1,000 hectares for the temperate ecozones. This dataset is a revision and update of a previous dataset created for the GFWC report Canada’s
(2010-07-30) Greenpeace, Sierra Club Prairie, Keepers of the Athabasca and Global Forest Watch Canada together released databases compiled by prominent scientist Dr. Kevin Timoney, one with more than 6,500 incidents, regarding tar sands operations that raise serious concerns about how companies are allowed to operate in this province by the Alberta government.
(2009-06-25) Anthropogenic Change analysis was performed in Nova Scotia using Landstat TM imagery between the approximate time periods of 1990 and 2007. Changes were detected using a simple image differencing technique between Band 5 of temporal image pairs at a user specified change threshold. The detected change was converted to vector format and visually analyzed to identify anthropogenic changes and digitize changes not detected by the image differencing process.
(2008-07-02) This dataset was developed to determine the extent and location of changes within the Ontario Greenbelt between 1993 and 2007. While the analysis likely underestimates the amount of conversion, a key result of the study was that there was very little conversion or loss of forests and wetlands, but a disproportionately high conversion of high-value agricultural lands to urban/built-up areas.
(2007-03-27) Data contains all human-caused forest disturbances (e.g., clearcuts, roads, reservoirs) for the approximate period of 2000 to 2006 within the Global Forest Watch Canada Ontario case study areas ("Northwest Ontario" and "Kenogami") defined by selected Landsat 5/7 image pairs.
