Abstract:

For each dam location provided by the Atlas of Canada 1,000,000 National Frameworks Data, Hydrology – Dams (V6.0) dataset, the spatial boundary of the associatedreservoirwas produced by 1) extracting the extent from a secondary data source or 2) manually digitizing or classifying from remotely sensed imagery. The Natural Resources Canada, National Hydrology Network (NHN) was used as the primary source for reservoir extent extraction. Secondary sources included Natural Resources Canada, Land Cover, Circa 2000 – Vector dataset, CanVec, and unpublished data from the Canadian Forestry Service. Manual digitizing was performed from Landsat TM/ETM+ imagery or Google Earth imagery.

If the reservoir boundary could not be directly extracted from the NHN or the NHN date was not relevant to the date of dam construction, then the boundary was modified with or created from a secondary data source or manuallydigitized from Landsat or Google Earth imagery.

If the water body polygon extracted from the NHN did not accurately define the reservoir extent upstreamfrom the dam, then one or more the following methods were used:

1) The upstream extent was determined from the natural topography.

2) The upstream extent was determined from where the water surface elevation remained equal to the elevation of the water surface adjacent to the dam. Elevation was acquired from Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) data, which has a resolution of 3 arc-second or about 90 metres at the equator.

3) Historic imagery that was acquired prior to dam construction was also used to verify reservoir extent.

There were a total of 518 reservoirs created using the above approach.

Purpose:

Reservoirs of Canada was created to obtain an accurate spatial boundary extent of major reservoirs in Canada. Major reservoirs were defined as the reservoirs associated with the dams listed in the Atlas of Canada 1,000,000 National Frameworks Data, Hydrology – Dams (V6.0) spatial dataset provided by Natural Resources Canada. The Atlas of Canada - dams were, in turn, based on a selection of the Canadian Dam Association (CDA) Register of Dams in Canada. The tailings dams and the dams under construction listed in the register are not included in the Atlas of Canada dataset resulting in a total 843 of the 933 dams listed in the CDA Register.
